“Al di fuori di ogni istituzione o legame, il sadhu, su approvazione del suo guru, abbandona tutto e vive solo di preghiera e di ciò che il Signore, attraverso le mani dei suoi devoti, vorrà donargli. E proprio l’assoluta radicalità con la quale viene vissuta in India la vocazione alla vita monastica, o meglio al sannyasa, che affascina Abhishiktananda.

Il sannyasa costituisce una delle quattro asrama o fasi che scandiscono, secondo la tradizione vedica, la vita di un bramino. Le fasi, della durata di venticinque anni ciascuna, prevedono l’educazione alla scuola del guru (Brahmacharia asrama), l’assoluzione degli obblighi di padre di famiglia (Grihastha asrama), il ritiro in silenzio e meditazione nella foresta (Vànaprastha asrama) e in fine la grande rinuncia (Sannyasa asrama). All’ingresso in questa fase finale, il bramino getta nel fiume i suoi capelli e il filo sacro, segni dell’appartenenza alla casta più elevata. Così facendo egli, libero da ogni vincolo mondano, abbandona la sua casta, i suoi beni, la sua famiglia, la sua storia, e tutto ciò che fino ad allora lo aveva identificato come individuo. D’ora in poi le parole «io» e «mio» non rientreranno più nel suo vocabolario, non avrà una fissa dimora ed elemosinerà quotidianamente il cibo necessario per il sostentamento del proprio corpo.

Queste austerità così come il kavi, il colore ocra delle vesti, non sono che il segno esteriore della vera rinuncia, quella al proprio ahamkara, il proprio ego. Nonostante già da due anni vestisse il colore della grande rinuncia, fu solo ad Arunachala che Abhishiktananda sentì di essersi in qualche modo conformato a ciò che esso significa. «Ho trascorso le ultime due settimane in un meraviglioso sogno. Ho vissuto quasi totalmente come un monaco hindu e non più come un sannyasin dilettante, come sono stato tanto a lungo. [...] È la prima volta che mi sono davvero pienamente conformato all’ideale di un sannyasin-hindu in solitudine, silenzio e povertà».”
